Bump Art For Comic Relief
In February 2009 I made a suggestion on a face painting chat forum, about painting bumps for Comic Relief. They thought it was a good idea, so I set up a page on the red nose day site and joined, together with lots of other painters across the country. We were sponsored to paint as many bumps as we could between 6th and 20th March 2009. And the pregnant ladies were being sponsored to have it done. Everyone involved had a great time and raised lots of money. We raised £1,330.25 on-line alone and some people sent in money off line so our total was probably nearer £1,500. I painted 3 bumps in 2009 and created calendars featuring photo's of the bumps painted by most of the artists involved.
We did it again in 2011, between 11th and 25th March, again I painted 3 bumps. Our team raised over £8,000!! We made it into a national magazine "Take A Break" and one of my designs featured in it. Take a look at the bottom of this page to see the article. As a result of being in the magazine I then featured on Channel 5's Live with Gabby, painting two ladies bumps.
In 2013 we did it all over again between 8th and 22nd March 2013. We raised an incredible £9598

RULES FOR THE EVENT - These are the rules/suggestions set out for the event
FACE & BODY PAINTERS - If you are a face painter and you would like to take part please try and follow these rules where ever possible
MUM'S - If you are a mum to be please read these guidelines
1. You are receiving a professional service at a fraction of the price it would normally cost. Please pay your painter the £5 fee and then get all your friends and family to sponsor them. Download a sponsor form here.
2. Make sure you are comfortable while you are being painted. This will help the painter because as long as you are comfy she/he will be able to concentrate on the artwork. Try and go to the toilet before they start so that they can paint you as fast as possible. Most bumps take around 1 - 2 hours to paint.
3. Help the painter to get as many bumps to paint as possible by telling any other pregnant ladies you know about the event. Maybe you could have a word with your local Antenatal Group and see if they would let you do the painting there?

FACE & BODY PAINTERS - If you are a face painter and you would like to take part please try and follow these rules where ever possible
- Join the Official Team and create your own Red Nose Giving Page.
- Bumps must be painted between 6th - 20th March to be counted in your total bumps painted.
- If there are any mums that are due before the date of the event, you can still paint them but they should not be included in your total for the bump-a-thon.
- Painting can take place wherever you can do it, in your own home, at the mum-to-be's home, a friends house, a hotel, hospital ward, anywhere you and the mum's feel comfortable.
- You can join up with other painters in the area and all paint at the same location if there is room.
- The suggested amount to charge the mum's to get their bump painted is £5 per bump, this is to go towards the cost of paints. This is on condition that they promise to get their family and friends to sponsor you. If you feel you are in a position to paint for free and would like to donate the £5 to Comic Relief, you can.
- 5. You can sponsor yourself.
- 6. The design doesn't have to be related to Comic Relief, it is entirely up to you and the mum to be you are painting.
- 7. Make sure you take rests regularly if you are painting more than one bump on the same day.
- 8. Above all else "Have Fun" this should be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Bump Art for Comic Relief 2013
Here are the bumps I painted for the 2013 event which raised £110 altogether
First Bump of 2013The first lady to be painted for this years event chose to have Peaches from Ice Age because this had been the nickname for the baby. The Gingerbread Man from Shrek represents her son. We got in the paper too which helped to promote the event.

2nd Bump for 2013Emma asked her daughter to help decide on the design. They chose to have Upsy Daisy from In the Night Garden. I loved painting both Emma and her daughter, who decided to be painted too :)

Bump number 3The third lady I painted this year was Amy. She chose the Irish Rugby Team logo.

The Fourth BumpDeb saw an image on line on a website for maternity t-shirts and decided she would like me to paint it on her tummy. The original design is copyrighted to Bubs n Bumps By Nikki D

The final Bump for Comic Relief 2013Michelle was the last lady to have her bump painted during the event this year. She chose Sooty because he is her sons favourite character. We kept the pictures a secret until her wedding day and she used the pictures to reveal the sex of the baby at the wedding reception.

Bump Art for Comic Relief 2011
Here are my bumps from the 2011 event.
My First BumpFor my first bump last year I was told the mum would like to have the wolves logo (Wolverhampton Wanderers FC) painted as the dad to be is a fan of theirs. As I'm not a big football fan I googled them and as the logo is a very simple one I decided to include their team mascot in the design. I found a pic for the young wolves (children's fan club) and used that as a design to work from.
I even included Comic Relief in the design by giving Wolfie a Red Nose (Honkus) |

My Second Bump
My second bump was painted on a wonderful young lady in Spalding. After going over a few design ideas with her she chose Baby Spongebob, so I then looked into finding some nice pictures of him and Patrick that I could use to help me create the design. This was a really fun one to paint and we used her belly button for Spongebob's tongue. It worked really well. To make the design stand out even more I used U.V. paints. We even included all three of the red noses in this design, bouncing in the background.
The full length picture of Melissa was featured in Take A Break magazine in August 2011. |
My Third BumpMelissa loved having it done so much she asked me to paint another design on her on 22nd March. We went for a more girly design this time and did fairies and flowers. We also included the baby's name "Brooke" on the design. This time I used the shape of her belly button to form the body of a tiny baby fairy asleep in the middle of a rose, inspired by an Anne Geddes photo.
Melissa and her beautiful baby, Brooke appeared on Live with Gabby on Channel 5. |

Bump Art For Comic Relief 2009
These were the bumps I painted for the first event I organized for Comic Relief back in 2009. These bumps are now featured in a hardback book available to buy on my website. Take a look at Bump Art Memorabilia for more info.
My first sponsored bump for Comic Relief
After discussing it with the mum-to-be, we decided to go with a Winnie the Pooh and friends theme because she is a big fan of Eeyore and has decorated the baby's room with Piglet things. We included the baby's name and I sprayed the whole design with fixing spray to prevent it rubbing off on her clothes, it took almost 2 and a half hours to paint but she enjoyed it and said it was very relaxing. Katie's daughter had her face painted while I was there and when I had finished painting her mum's tummy she asked if

2nd Bump for Comic Relief
The second bump for comic relief was painted on 12th March and the lady I painted wanted something along the red nose theme, this was the design we came up with together, using her belly button for the mouth of one of the nose characters. We were also featured in the local newspaper. We added a couple of extra butterflies just to finish it off. It took just over an hour to do.

My third bump for Comic Relief
The mum-to-be and her other children decided they liked the Winnie the Pooh one I had done before so much that they wanted him too. To make it a bit different I did Lumpy the heffalump with Pooh and Piglet and added some spring flowers as the baby is due in April. She enjoyed the experience so much she is considering getting me to come back and do another one before she has the baby. This one took about 2 hours to do.
